NBR to award top taxpaying professionals

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) would reward people of various professional groups for significantly contributing to the national exchequer by paying higher taxes, reports BSS.
The revenue authorities have already introduced awards mainly for high taxpaying corporate and business people, and will soon launch awards for top taxpaying professionals, NBR chairman told a pre-budget discussion meeting yesterday.
Md Nojibur Rahman, also the secretary of the Internal Resources Division (IRD), said that NBR would also announce the names of 303 top taxpayers of three new categories, which include young entrepreneurs, female and general taxpayers mainly professionals.
He said 101 high taxpayers would be selected from each of the categories for their significant contribution to the national exchequer.
The announcement came in a response to the proposal by some senior journalists for awarding more people covering various professional groups for paying higher taxes, which they believe would encourage people to pay taxes regularly and would create the environment for a “healthy competition for paying tax to get the rewards”.
The recommendation for the award was made for the groups included journalists, lawyers, teachers, physicians, chartered accountants and engineers while the state minister for planning and finance suggested recognising government employees as well for the similar contribution. “The government employees should also be included for the award,” MA Mannan told the meeting, held at the finance ministry. At the meeting, editors and senior journalists of different newspapers and television channels discussed the major aspects of the national budget and recommended some measures for making the next fiscal measures and allocation more effective in propelling economic growth and development.
Among the journalists were News Today editor Reazuddin Ahmed, Financial Express editor Moazzem Hossain, Amader Orthoniti editor Naimul Islam Khan, deputy editor of Prothom Alo Abdul Quayum and Samakal publisher AK Azad.
