Tk 389cr rural infrastructure development project approved

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved the ‘Rural infrastructural development of Jamalpur and Sherpur districts project’ with an estimated cost of Tk 388.81 crore in a bid to create rural road communication network there and thus ensuring social and economic development.
The approval came the ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair held at the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.
Briefing the reporters after the meeting, State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan said ECNEC approved a total of seven projects involving Tk 1,488.14 crore. “Of the total project cost, Tk 1,430.77 crore will come from the government fund while Tk 57.37 crore from the organization’s own fund,”
Of the approved seven projects, four are new while three are revised projects.
The State Minister for Finance and Planning said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina again put emphasis on constructing concrete roads instead of the bitumen roads as these roads are often damaged due to rain.
In this connection, Sheikh Hasina also suggested for constructing these concrete roads through making slabs.
Planning Ministry officials said that Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) under the Local Government Division (LGD) will implement the rural infrastructural development project from entire government fund by June 2020.
The main objectives of the project are creating rural road communication network for marketing both farm and non-farm products side by side ensuring social and economic development. Besides, the project will also aim for creating short and long-term employment opportunities through rural infrastructural development.
Under the project, there will be upazila, union and village road development alongside submersible road development as well as constructing bridges, road maintenance and tree plantation protection work.
Commenting on the project, State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan said there is no denying the fact that there is huge lack in rural infrastructures for which there is a very much need for infrastructural development and setting up communication network for important areas like Jamalpur and Sherpur.
The ECNEC approved another project titled ‘Constructing residential buildings for the female prison guards with an estimated cost of Tk 93.97 crore. The Bangladesh Jail and the Department of Housing and Public Works will jointly implement the project by June 2019.
Under the project, 14 residential buildings would be built for the female prison guards at 14 district jails, some 18 residential buildings would be built in nine central jails and one new residential building at Manikganj district jail, upward extension in existing residential buildings in 26 districts, construction of 1955.21 running meter compound drain, construction of some 5144.45 square meter approach road, construction of some 2421.78 running meter boundary wall, some 21415.37 square meter land development.
MA Mannan said in the recent times, the number of jail inmates have been increasing day by day. As a result, it has become very much essential to develop the accommodation, water supply and power system for the female warders. Under the circumstances, the project has been approved to create accommodation facilities for the female prison guards.
MA Mannan said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the meeting asked the Bangladesh Jail authorities and Ministry of Home Affairs to come up with new initiative to boost the skills and working efficiency of the both male and female inmates in the countrywide jails.
He said that initiatives could also be taken to engage the inmates in making various hand-
made products during their stay in jails and they could also get some portion of income from the sold items.
The other projects approved in the meeting are construction of some 11 secondary schools and six government colleges in Dhaka metropolis, 3rd revised, with Tk 293.05 crore, Special development of Haji Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University with Tk 156.84 crore, Further development of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, 2nd revised, with Tk 120.05 crore, Establishment of five institutes of Marine technologies at Munshiganj, Faridpur, Chandpur, Sirajganj and Bagerhat, 3rd revised, with Tk 244.18 crore and construction and reconstruction of roads, drains, and tree plantation in Narayanganj city corporation with Tk 191.24 crore.
Ministers and State Ministers attended the meeting while Planning Commission members and concerned secretaries were present.
