Lemon cultivation changes fate of 500 in Magura

Lemon cultivation is turning the fortune wheel of about 500 farmers of the district.

Cultivation of it is gaining popularity among the farmers because of its high market price, good demand and low production cost.

The DAE, Magura, said lemon was cultivated in the district only in 20 hectares of land five years ago but now the cultivation area stood at 50 hectares. At present about 500 farmers in the district are involved in cultivating the citrus fruit commercially.

Abdul Mutalib a farmer of village Krishnapur under Sadar upazila, said he has cultivated lemon in two bighas of land this year. “I am expecting Tk 0.1 million profit. “Lemon has made me financially solvent”, he added.

“I was the only person who cultivated lemon commercially in this village. But at present at least 10 farmers here are cultivating lemon being encouraged by my success”, he further said.

Moshiur Rahman, another farmer of village Hazipur under Sadar Upazila, said, “I started farming lemon five years ago with a capital of Tk 3,000. But now my capital has stood at around Tk 0.1 million. Marketing facility of the fruit lemon is much easier than the other crops or vegetables.”
