Good cucumber output makes Bogra farmers happy

Bumper cucumber production is bringing happiness among the poor and marginal farmers of the district including the vast Barind tract.

The farmers are now passing busy time processing the crop to sell them in the local markets. Per kg cucumber is being sold at Tk 20 – Tk 30 to the retail markets. Farmers are also happy over the price range.

District DAE office sources said that farmers have cultivated cucumber on around 250 hectares of land against the target of 230 hectares aiming a bumper production and satisfactory retailer price in this current season.

The agriculture office provided necessary agri-inputs, the sources added.

Sub-assistant agriculture office of Sadar Upazila Faridur Rahman said to grow the crop, farmers do not need huge capital and vast area of land. To make the programme a grand success, the authority concerned are monitoring the farmers going to the croplands round the clock. The farmers can grow around 17-18 maunds of cucumber from per hectare, if the weather condition remain favourable.

Farmer Abdur Rahim, 40, of Mohasthan village under Shibgonj Upazila, said, “I have brought 0.24 acre of land under cucumber cultivation in this season spending Tk 3300.

He said he has already earned Tk 5,000 from the crop selling to the wholesaler from last fifteen days and rest of the crops may be sold at Tk 4000”, he added.

Medical officer of Dupchanchia Health Complex Zafrul Kawsar said cucumber reduces the extra fat of human body. “We need to keep cucumber in our daily menu to be healthy and happy”, he added.

Deputy Director of DAE Chandi Das said the farmers of the district are showing high interest to bring more lands under cucumber cultivation from last few year as it is proved them a lucrative crop.

“We will take more programme to grow record amount of cucumber next year if the farmers’ interest remain the same, he added.
